So, You’ve Picked an Outdoor Wedding? Here’s What You Actually Need to Know

09/07/2025

(From your mates with big tents and slightly muddy boots)

First things first: outdoor weddings? 10/10. You’ve officially said no to stuffy halls and yes to fresh air, epic views, and a day that feels properly yours.

We’re World Inspired Tents, a tipi and sailcloth marquee hire crew based here in the South West of England. We cover Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset and beyond and we’ve helped lots of couples pull off outdoor weddings in fields, gardens, cliff tops - you name it, we’ve done them all!

Over the years, we’ve seen the highs, the “oops” moments, and everything in between, and we’re sharing the stuff that actually helps. No fluff. No sales pitch. Just honest advice from the people who’ll probably be pegging canvas into your lawn the day before you say “I do.”

So, here it is: no fluff, no wedding waffle, just the stuff you’ll be glad someone told you.

The Field Isn’t Always Just a Field

You found the perfect spot, great view, loads of space, cows not included (hopefully). But before you go full Pinterest on it, pause and check the basics:

  • Is the ground actually flat? Not “looks fine” flat, we mean “your chairs won’t topple over” flat.
  • Can people park? Can suppliers get in? Can you get a loo truck down that lane?
  • Is there water, power, or will your suppliers be bringing in a generator and crossing fingers?

We do site visits for this very reason, to save you from panicking later when you realise the stunning meadow is also home to 48 molehills and a badger set.

Tipi vs Sailcloth Tent: What’s the Vibe?

This is the question we get all the time. The short version?

Tipis = relaxed, rustic, a bit cool without trying too hard
Think festival flags, fire pits, wooden tables, and dancing under fairy lights. Also: weather-proof, strong as anything, and surprisingly warm when the sun goes down.

Sailcloth = fresh, bright, and beautifully simple
Imagine smooth white canvas stretched high, with sides that roll up to invite in the sunshine and the stunning South West views. It’s like your favourite garden party, but upgraded, airy, elegant, and perfect for couples who want their wedding to feel both polished and perfectly relaxed.

Can’t decide? Don’t worry, we’ll talk you through it based on your guest numbers, style, and where you’re getting married.

The Weather Chat (Yes, We’re Going There)

We live here too, and yes, the weather can keep you guessing. But the best outdoor weddings are the ones where you’re either fully equipped for whatever happens, or just ready to go with the flow and dance in the rain. Either way, the party carries on, dry or drenched, and happy. Here’s how we help:

  • Proper matted flooring: so no one sinks into the grass mid-speech
  • Side panels: on if it’s wet or windy, off if it’s glorious
  • Fire pits: trust us, people love a fire pit
  • Lighting: essential for the day, showstopper at night

And if it does pour? You’ll still be warm, dry, and dancing with your friends while the rain taps the canvas. That’s a vibe in itself.

Don’t Forget the “Not-Fun-But-Important” Stuff

You’ve got the tent. The view is perfect. The vibe is immaculate. But where’s everyone going to go to the loo?

We help couples figure out all the extras they might not have thought of yet, things like:

  • Generator hire (unless you’re blessed with a plug socket in the hedge)
  • Luxury toilets (yes, they exist and they’re honestly great)
  • Catering tents and bar setups
  • Furniture (tables, chairs, benches)
  • Dance floors, lighting, the works

You don’t have to know what you need straight away. That’s what we’re here for.

A Few Things We’ve Learned the Fun Way

  • Always bring extra blankets, people love them, especially after dark.
  • Don’t skip the chill-out space. A couple of comfy seating areas, a very happy grandparent.
  • Fairy lights are never too much. Honestly.
  • Guests will 100% dance harder in a tipi or sailcloth.
